چکیده

S U M M A R Y The induced polarization model developed recently by Revil and Florsch to model the complex conductivity of fully saturated granular materials has been extended to partial saturation conditions. It is an improvement over previous models like the Vinegar and Waxman model, which do not account explicitly for the effect of frequency. The Vinegar and Waxman model can be considered as a limiting case of the Revil and Florsch model in the limit where the distribution of relaxation times is very broad. The extended model is applied to the case of unconsolidated sands partially saturated with oil and water. Laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the influence of oil saturation, frequency, grain size, and conductivity of the pore water upon the complex resistivity response of oil-bearing sands. The low-frequency polarization (below 100 Hz) is dominated by the polarization of the Stern layer (the inner part of the electrical double layer coating the surface of the grains in contact with water). The phase exhibits a well-defined relaxation peak with a peak frequency that is dependent on the mean grain diameter as predicted by the model. Both the resistivity and the magnitude of the phase increase with the relative saturation of the oil. The imaginary (quadrature) component of the complex conductivity is observed to decrease with the oil saturation. All these observations are reproduced by the new model. Q2

Induced polarization in hydrocarbon-saturated sands and sandstones: experimental study and general effective medium modeling

We have studied the induced polarization (IP) response of multiphase porous systems by conducting complex resistivity (CR) frequency-domain IP measurements for sands and sandstones samples containing salt water in pores and those whose unsaturated pores were filled with synthetic oil. The results of our study show that the oil saturated sands and sandstone samples are characterized by a signifi...

Analysis of Low-Frequency Passive Seismic Attributes in Maroun Oil Field, Iran

Nowadays, viable and cost-effective methods play a vital role in hydrocarbon exploration up to the point that geoscientists cannot rule out the importance of the passive seismic method (PSM) in oil exploration operations. This method is based on seismic energy, which has a natural source. This study focuses on seismic energy anomaly of 1-6 Hz. Some researches show that spectral and polarization...

The Viability of Oil Extraction from Trinidad Tar Sands by Radio Frequency Heating: A Simulation Approach

Trinidad has tar sand resources of about 2 billion barrels of oil on land in the Parrylands/Guapo and Brighton areas. With an oil price of over USD 25 per barrel, the commercial extraction of oil from Trinidad tar sands is viable, but it requires a careful study. The relatively small extent of this tar sand (about 10,000 acres and with depths varying from surface to less than 500 feet) and with...

Energy Return on Investment of Canadian Oil Sands Extraction from 2009 to 2015

Oil sands, as unconventional oil, are so essential to both Canada and the world that special attention should be paid to their extraction status, especially their energy efficiency. One of the most commonly used methods to evaluate energy efficiency is the Energy Return on Investment (EROI) analysis. This paper focuses on EROI analysis for both in situ oil sands and mining oil sands over the pe...

The Influence of Grain Morphology on Reservoir Quality of Some Athabasca Oil Sands Samples

This study focused on the determination of detailed grain morphology using SEM technology on some Athabasca oil sands samples obtained from the Upper McMurray Formation in the Manville Group which occurs in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. The research was carried out using scientific techniques to understand grain morphology—being a major effect in discerning reservoir quality—a factor wh...
